If you've set a resolution, we hope you are still working towards it...if you didn't, you can still aim to improve quality of life one way or another. We're hoping to engage in more eco-friendly living and hope that's on your bucket list too.

Going green doesn't have to be a complete lifestyle change, of course, it certainly can be. Trying to do one or two small things on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis can help your community, and ultimately the world.

In our household, we're trying our best to be on top of recycling any material we possibly can. We've even purchased a larger bin to help contain some of the recycled items as we found we ended up throwing more things in the trash once our bins were topped off. Of course this makes us cringe every time we do it, but was felt to be of necessity, as storage is at a premium in our garage. We've got a memo on our family bulletin board that shows all the items our trash service will pick up, and it helps encourage our kids to be self sufficient and aid in the recycling process. We're not 100% perfect recyclers, but we're doing our best!

Figure out what your household recycling needs are and find a bin that suites just over that capacity to ensure a hearty recycling effort!

For items that aren't approved to be recycled through our trash service, we try to collect and take to the appropriate recycling facility in our area. Little things like styrofoam egg cartons can be brought back to our grocery store, where they feature bins outside of the store. Same goes for plastic bags. We alternate between plastic bags and our own fabric ones as we tend to reuse the plastic ones as trash bags for small trash cans throughout our house, or as catch-all bags for our cars.
Another effort we're looking to make is decreasing plastic water bottles. We're comparing a filter system for our kitchen sink vs a filtered pitcher. We've used the pitcher in the past, and are leaning towards the sink faucet attachment this time around. If you live in an area where your quality of water is not so great, consider investing in one of these to help remove impurities and contaminants.

The last thing we've begun paying more attention to, to live a greener lifestyle, are purchasing items made from recycled goods. More and more items of all types are being created using some or all recycled materials. Paper goods, office supplies, apparel, and even sports equipment has found a way to embark on sustainable manufacturing and it's quite impressive to see. Below are some items we've recently come across that happen to be great examples (that we would have never guessed) of consumer goods made from recycled materials.
These items can no longer be used for their initial purpose, but I just can't bring myself to throw them out. The problem is, as crafty as I can be...I just don't have the time to repurpose these items. The DIYer in my begs for me to wait until next weekend, then the next weekend, then the next. As I'm constantly pushing back my repurpose list for a much more priority driven weekend to-do list, I'm hit with the hard question-will I ever find the time?

In my life, right now, the answer is simple...NO. So I'm at a cross road-do I get rid of these things that I've been hanging on to, or by chance, can I repurpose them in another way, that requires less work? I choose the latter.

The first item I have, is an old pallet. I found it a year ago and thought up a million different cool things I could do with it. I don't have the time to take it apart, so I'll leave it intact. And now that old pallet, will become a pallet with a new life. It will become my new herb garden. All I have to get is landscape fabric, which I can find when I go to get my new herb plants at my local nursery...a few staples-DONE!

And while I'm at my local nursery, I've decided to pick up some bird seed so I can reuse my plastic bottles like this...

A few less bottles in my recycling bin, a few happier birds for the winter.

And then there is this little table my neighbor was throwing out. Fine condition, and I just knew it could be used for something. So now my son is going to have a new drawing table after this weekend.
We're bringing seasonal favorites like pumpkin, apple, and squash to satisfy your taste buds and give a healthy dose of vitamins and other nutritional perks that are good for you and your family.

Today, we'll start things off sweetly, with some Mini Cinnamon Rolls, brought to you by Two Peas and Their Pod. The fall favorite, delicious pumpkin butter, is hidden between the soft bread, cinnamon, and ooey gooey frosting. Pumpkin is known for having large doses of vitamin A, fiber, and potassium, so you can feel better about having one of these delicious rolls.
Today we're bringing you 3 delectable dishes featuring several different varieties of peppers that are sure to please your palette.

We're kicking things off on a spicy note with Spicy Black Bean Stuffed Peppers from Can You Stay For Dinner? The ever adorable, Andie Mitchell uses sweet red peppers, but believes you can stuffed whatever pepper you fancy the most. The aroma that will emit from your kitchen while cooking these, will lure spouses and children alike!

Staying with the spice for a second, if you're a fan of jalapenos, then you'll love Closet Cooking's Jalapeno Popper Quiche. This dish is fabulous for a meal any time of the day, but would make you belle of the ball if you brought it to your next brunch.

Calming things down (a bit), our next recipe has a subtle spice with a pinch of red pepper flakes, but can definitely be kicked up while creating the sauce. Simply Recipes offer a fabulous Asian Noodle Salad filled with colorful veggies that can be whipped up in a half hour or less. Elise warns the sauce is made to just coat the noodles and it's so very true. We recommend adding a little more soy sauce and cutting back a hair on the sugar as we found it a little too sweet for us. The raw bell pepper really brightens this dish and adds a fresh flavorful bite.

(Meatless Monday Edition)Going meatless once a week can not only save you a few bucks, it can help boost your immune system and help prevent a TON of diseases and illnesses by giving your body a shot of nutritious veggies and fruits that might otherwise be missing from your diet. Many kids groan at the thought of having a meal that consists only of vegetables, but that's not what Meatless Monday is about at all. It's simply taking a break from meat, fish and poultry. You can still eat all the carbs, grains, and starches you would normally consume.

Today's recipes offer traditional dishes with a twist, and not just because they are meatless. Whether it's a complimentary ingredient, or a complete substitution, we're sure you'll find a winner out of this bunch.

Let's kick things off with a classic kid's favorite, given a superfood twist. Quinoa Mac and Cheese by Simply Quinoa, not only substitutes regular pasta with quinoa, but it also adds a shot of hidden vegetables, with pureed butternut squash to give it a creamy, dreamy texture. Use whatever your favorite cheese is, or even use a few different varieties to kick this dish up a few notches.

The next dish again, really throws some great ideas and large doses of veggies with it's take on another classic, spaghetti and meatballs. Skinnytaste.com features Eggplant Meatballs over "Zoodles" or zucchini noodles. Stick to regular pasta if you don't think the family will go for the zoodle-noodle switch, as Gina's eggplant meatballs offer a plethora of nutritious goodness.

Our final dish is a simple spin on another favorite. When it comes to cobblers, crisps, or crumbles, why use one fruit when you can use two? Instead of plain ol' cherry crisp, Good Housekeeping features a "triple tested" hit with their Cherry Nectarine Crisp. If you can't use fresh fruit or are out of season, check your local grocer's freezer and follow the thawing directions on the bag.

Crispy oven roasted potatoes can be eaten as a side for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Let the Baking Begin has perfected a simple recipe that requires a little extra cook time to get the right amount of crispness. If you don't have the full hour they recommend, skip the soaking step after you wash and cut the potatoes.
Speaking of switching things up, this next recipe will really kick up that plain, boring bowl of ice-cream. Try a Cookie Bowl instead! Coleen from Coleen's Recipes makes her own cookie dough with specific instructions to create a bigger, sturdier bowl. Rich in fiber and full of health boosting anti-oxidants, beets have a great rap of fighting off and preventing diseases, but aren't always thought of when it comes to gourmet eating. Today we'll introduce this lovely red veggie in three unique ways, knowing that one of these recipes could be a new staple on your weekly menu, if not all three!

Let's start with a fun, shredded salad that provides a lot of color and can even be introduced to toddlers who haven't mastered the art of the fork. By cutting or shredding the beets and other ingredients with a mandolin or food processor (we like the processor best to aid us in making this speedy side), a salad is transformed into something new for the family with a fun texture. Better Homes and Garden adds an easy dressing to go along with this side for a unique and nutritious dish for your Meatless Monday menu.
Our next dish is gourmet with a capital G. Beet and Turnip Gratin by Brandon at Kitchen Konfidence is so pretty, you'll look like the next big Food Network star with this dish. Make this the centerpiece for your Meatless Monday meal and watch everyone ooh and ahhh (and drool) over it!

Last and equally as pretty, is Coffee and Quinoa's Shocking Pink Sunbutter Smoothie. No mention of the word 'beet' in the title, but believe us that's what really gives it the shocking pink color (we'll take a dress in the same color, please). The beets also help balance out the tartness of the raspberries and offer a hint of sweetness which makes this smoothie perfect to start or end your day.
If your child has just started kindergarten, teaching responsibility through a routine or chore chart can help them understand what is expected to get ready for each day. For older children, a chart can also help them get into their new routine and help ease your morning and evening work loads.

A simple chart, like the one below from PositiveParents.org is a great way to give very young children basic instructions that should be completed in order each and every night to get ready for bedtime. By sticking to the chart, children know what is expected of them and can lead to a smoother schedule.

Older children can have a routine chart as well that include more complex skills such as making their bed or packing their school supplies away for the next day. Chore charts can be implemented based on your families needs, if there are standard chores to be done on a regular schedule, such as picking up toys or setting the table, but there are other interesting ways to engage the kids, such as a chore jar. The chore jar gives children the ability to choose what chore they want to do, or gives them a "random" chore based on what stick they pick out of the jar. I Wash You Dry has an outstanding example of a fun chore jar that can be completed each week or month depending on what you choose to include.

You can choose to pay an allowance or offer an award if your child can complete their assigned tasks to your satisfaction. Some studies warn that certain tasks and routines should not be awarded so the child learns it is part of an expectation that they do without receiving anything for the effort, particularly when it comes to hygienic responsibilities.

Do you use a chore or routine chart in your house? At what age was your child when you started?
Meatless Monday Recipes Featuring GarlicAfter today's batch of recipes, you might need a stick of gum, but the health benefits and flavor you get from adding garlic to your food is undeniable.

Garlic has many health boosting characteristics. From battling high blood pressure and reducing high cholesterol, to acting as an anti-inflammatory agent. It also offers a total immune system boost thanks to its powerful antioxidants.

Let's get things going with our first recipe and only entree for the day. Garlic Butter Mushroom and Provolone Melts are just tasty. The smell alone while cooking is just short of heavenly. Brought to you by a Pinch of Yum, the addition of white wine makes this melt kind of fancy...not too fancy, but just fancy enough. A perfect recipe for a quick dinner one night. And if you need a side with it, then try one of the three following recipes that also feature our friend, garlic.

Garlic Mashed Cauliflower could be a nice pairing with the melt above, or use it with just about any other entree, for any day of the week. Simple and satisfying, it's quicker than making mashed potatoes and healthier too! From Fueling with Food, they add that this recipe offers 2 servings of vegetable, which is around the average of what your daily intake should be.

Or how about some greens? Broccoli and asparagus are two of our favorite. Try Skinnytaste.com's Garlic Broccolini or Eatingwell.com's Roasted Asparagus with Garlic-Lemon Sauce. Two very different takes featuring garlic, but you can't go wrong with either. These recipes act as a great side dish to compliment any meal, whether you're participating in Meatless Monday or not.
We've got four fabulous recipes that can kick start your day, satisfy your sweet tooth, or just offer a cool, refreshing beverage. Not to mention they all taste good and are good for you!

The biggest craze on the block are green smoothies. You can pretty much include anything you want in one of these, but they don't always yield the tastiest end result. This Green Smoothie is one of the recipes Lauren Conrad uses to start her day and she swears "it doesn't taste like grass!" Change things up with this cool chart we have on our Pinterest board from Indulgy.com

Not into the green thing? Then these next two fruity concoctions may be a better version for you. Averie from Averie Cooks satisfies her sweet tooth with this Blueberry Pie Smoothie. Created as her version of the perfect blueberry pie, she was looking for an alternative to the real thing since she's a bigger fan of pie filling than the crust, which makes up a large part of any pie. Although is sounds sweet, don't be fooled...this recipe's sweet factor, is completely up to you, as she doesn't list a specific measurement for your sweetener of choice...we recommend you taste it without any added sweetener first, as the natural fruit sugars may be enough for you as is.

Or try Kristina's Berry Mango Smoothie from Hott Mama in the City. Simple, tasty, and perfect for your breakfast, snack, or even dessert! By using frozen fruit, you don't have to worry about adding ice to cool the drink down, nor worry about the beverage becoming too watery.

If you're looking for something a little less fruity, try Sally's Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Smoothie. With such a great partnership of chocolate and peanut butter, this smoothie offers 28 grams of protein! With the consistency closer to a milk shake, this smoothie might be a great way to trick yourself and the rest of the family into thinking they are getting a sugary snack, when in fact...you can control the sweetness. We liked it best without the honey, as she suggests, but try it out and see what you think!

Perfect Casserole Dishes for Meatless MondayPlanning a weekly menu is hard, having to cook all those components may be harder. Today's Meatless Monday post has 3 yummy casserole dishes that will save you time so maybe you can actually relax after the kids go to bed.

We'll start things off with a Sweet Potato and Rice Casserole, courtesy of Better Homes and Garden. This delectable dish is packed with protein (16 grams) and nutritious vitamins, thanks to the sweet potato and peppers, giving you a good dose of vitamins A and C.

The next recipe is a classic combination-Mushroom and Wild Rice. Cheesy and delicious, this would be perfect on a rainy day, or as Stephanie from Girl Versus Dough prescribes it as a comfort food on a snowy day in. Whenever you make it, you're sure to enjoy it!

Our last dish to get your through the day is a fun and festive, Rice and Bean Taco Bake by Food Doodles. Heidi likes to use this dish as a great way to use left overs and veggie scraps. We think it's an awesome way to sneak in veggies for picky eaters, like her grated carrot suggestion, or other items. The salsa, chilies, and taco seasoning pack enough flavor for you to get away with quite a lot ;)

With these one dish meals, you'll also have less time doing dishes this evening. What will you use your extra minutes doing instead? Maybe just throw those feet up on the couch, the vacuum and scrubbing can wait for another day.Super Eco Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14976924488475354035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7339155989151482083.post-27196885983464672762014-07-15T07:28:00.000-07:002014-07-15T07:28:33.873-07:00Green Spaces For Any HomeSummertime allows us to spend more time outside enjoying nature and all its glory. Trying to
figure out which “type” of biting your child is doing may help you
better address the problem. There is no right or wrong way, but we've found some tips for prevention and techniques for reaction, should this be a problem with your toddler.

Teach that biting HURTS!
If you are holding him, put him down immediately and portray emotions that you
are in pain. He knows what crying is, and even small babies are upset by others
crying because they know it signifies pain and unhappiness. Say<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"> "OUCH, BITING HURTS!"

If your child is ever around another child who
bites, keep them apart for awhile. Biters do tend to reinforce each other.

Be ready to
climb this uphill battle. This is not something that merely goes away on its
own. Persistence and reassurance are key to stop your child from biting.
Today's post will have your mouth watering from the pictures alone.

Raspberry Almond Scones from Two Peas and Their Pod might get your hands a little messy, but oh is it worth it. These pretty scones are perfect for breakfast (especially on the go), or for a dressed up brunch you can impress your friends and family by making. They look like they came from a fancy bakery somewhere. Don't be fooled by their looks though-they are super easy to make. Give it a try this weekend-we promise you'll be happy you did!
Another dish that's almost too pretty to eat-Fresh Strawberry Cobbler from Chocolate, Chocolate and More. So glad southern belle, Joan, chose to do more than just chocolate creations, because there is nothing better than fresh cobbler for dessert on a hot summer evening. Add ice cream to take this dessert to the next level! Thank you, ma'am!
According to Greenwaste.com, less than 1% of the total US waste stream was made up of aluminum cans, however the energy required to replace that 1% of waste would be enough to meet the electricity needs of Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, and Seattle combined! Keep America Beautiful states that recycling 1 aluminum can could save the approximate amount of energy needed to run your television for 3 hours-just one little can!

So, in honor of these statistics, we've found some creative and useful ways to reuse cans and other metal items in your own household to keep these items out of the trash.

Have some old aluminum bakeware? Cookie sheets can be turned into cute message boards for the kitchen. Cupcake tins can be great drawer organizers or paint holders for the artist in your family.
Swimmer's ear is the inflammation of the external ear canal and is caused when water is retained in the ear. Healthychildren.org, part of the American Association of Pediatrics, recommends using a preventative solution of 70% alcohol solution (rubbing alcohol) or a mixture of 1/2 parts rubbing alcohol, 1/2 parts white vinegar, if your child is susceptible to this problem.

Swimmer's ear and other ear infections can be very painful to experience. Signs to look for include your child complaining about pain in their ears, tugging on the ears, signs of irritability or more crying than usual (especially when lying down), trouble sleeping or hearing, fever, loss of appetite, or fluid draining from the ears. If you notice pus or fluid coming from the ears, it means the eardrum has ruptured. Simply wipe away the fluid with a clean cloth and avoid plugging with cotton, as retained pus can further cause irritation and infection.

Like most illnesses, ways to avoid ear infections can come down to frequent hand washing (to eliminate the spreading of germs). This is especially true during fall and winter months, where common colds and illnesses are rampant, but good hand washing should be put into action year round for both you, your child, and anyone else who comes into contact with your family, such as a day care provider, teacher, classmates, or other family members. Second hand smoke has also been linked to a variety of childhood illnesses and it is recommended you keep your child away from exposure. Kidshealth.org also encourages breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months as many antibodies in breast milk can help developing immune systems fight off infections and illnesses.

If you believe your child has an ear infection, be aware that many doctors may take a "wait and see" approach and not immediately prescribe antibiotics unless their is a pressing need or the infection takes place in a young infant. Reasons for this may be that the infection is caused by a virus and antibiotics won't do anything or doctors fear the overuse of drugs can lead to bacteria developing resistance to the medicine. They may ask you to wait and observe your child over a 48-72 hour time frame before they will prescribe anything. Tylenol and a clean, warm compresses can help alleviate some of the pain your child is experiencing. It is still a good idea to take your child to the doctor if you suspect an ear infection, as they can examine the ear to make sure the eardrum is still intact and or decide if it has been cause by a virus or bacteria.
Besides being annoying and causing a harrassing itch, mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects can carry disease. By following these simple tips, you can safely and naturally repel bugs from your yard and home, or anywhere you may go, all summer long.

The first thought you have when working to keep bugs away is to simply apply a bug spray, however more studies are coming out warning us of a chemical called DEET that is commonly used in many sprays on the market. DEET is an insecticide that can affect the nervous system and is very toxic to birds and aquatic life. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you do not use products containing DEET on children under the age of 2 months, and limiting the application of DEET on children over 2 months to one time a day. Washing your and your children's hands after application is also highly recommended, as is washing your child's body after you return inside.

If you are still interested in using a spray, spray pump bottles are recommended over aerosol cans, according to WebMD, as less inhalation of chemicals will result from the spray pump. There are a wide range of products out that are DEET free, many made by baby specific companies, like the ones below.
